Chex Quest was a DooM totalconversion(TC) developed by Digital Café, and released as freewareby Ralston Purina on boxes of Chex Cereal as a promotion back in 1996. Chex Quest consisted of a five level episode in which the player got totake on the role of the Chex Warrior and rid the peaceful planet of Bazoik(Yes. Bazoik.) of the evil mucus based life forms, the flemoids,which have invaded from another dimension. Upon completion of thegame, users were told to go to chexquest.com, where they were able to downloada second episode, Chex Quest 2, in the form of a patch wad. (Note: chexquest.comstill exists, but no longer has anything to do with Chex Quest.)

Chex Quest was touted asa 'non-violent' game, despite the fact it was a (very slightly) modifiedversion of DooM. Supposedly, none of the flemoids were ever actuallykilled, but were simply teleported back to their home dimension via the'zorch' energy fired from the player's weapons.

The Ultimate Chex Quest isa DooMtotal conversion, specifically for the GZDooMDooM source port, which combines Chex Quest 1 and 2, and updates the gameto take advantage of the capabilities of GZDooM,and today's faster computers.

When completed, The UltimateChex Quest will also fill in the remainder of the Chex Quest story, withfour full eight level episodes, and an ultimate showdown with the evilmad genius, Doctor Julius Fleming.

The project was originallycreated for the DooM Legacy source port, and was supposed to completedin four distinct phases. The division into phases is why early versionare marked as 'Phase I', or 'Phase II beta 3'.

However, after a long periodof inactivityon the project, and the conversion of the project over tothe GZDooM to take advantage of GZDooM's more advanced features, the phasesstarted to blend together, and so the 'Phase X beta Y' naming format wasabandoned. All versions, starting with release 5, are given releasenumbers instead.

Releases of this projectare made only when I believe there is enough new material or improvementsto justify them, and are therefore irregular, often with long waits inbetween.

So you may be wondering whyI would be so interested in fixing up an old DooM TC made as a promotionalgimmick to sell cereal back in 1996.

To be completely honest,I really had no interest in Chex Quest at all until June 28, 2003. That's when I came across a new entry in the FPS games section of Tucows. A company, called Scifience Studios was claiming to have a new versionof Chex Quest with 32 bit Windows support. I downloaded it, and discoveredthat it was the same old Chex Quest with a fancy installer and a copy ofDooM Legacy included.

This amused me at first,since it was obvious Scifience Studios hadn't done a blasted thing, exceptmerge Chex Quest 1 into the Ultimate DooM IWAD, which made their versionWAREZ (pirate software). They hadn't even rebuilt the nodes for openGLmode. There were missing walls and HOM in each and every level.

Then I got to thinking. I was not too pleased with the fact that Scifience was using DooM Legacywithout giving credit to the Legacy team (They even stripped the documentswhich are supposed to come with Legacy), and they were basically claimingcredit for doing absolutely nothing. As a veteran DooM modder, Chexquest just cried out to me to be fixed and updated. If there wasgoing to be a new version of Chex Quest, then by golly it was going tohave to be done right! There was only one person for the job, andthat was me.

Versions of The UltimateChex Quest from Release 6 onward can function as IWADs themselves and donot require the DooM IWAD. They must be specified as IWADs with the -iwadswitch, or chosen as the IWAD in a launch program, such as ZDL, in oderto work however.

If you had a good childhood, you’ll remember playing Chex Quest. If not, it’s a weird, non-violent first-person shooter running on the Doom engine that, as you may have guessed, featured a lot of Chex cereal themes. The original game was a promotional item that could be found in boxes of Chex cereal, and happened to be the first video game to be included with a box of cereal. Turns out you can download and play all three Chex Quests for free, right now, assuming you have a computer on which to do it. Why wouldn’t you want to? The game’s hero is the Chex Warrior, a human-like creature in an anthropomorphic piece of Chex cereal armor. I mean, c’mon.

If you’re wondering how a non-violent FPS works, the Chex Warrior shoots the enemies, the slimy Flemoid creatures, with a “Zorcher,” which teleports things instead of blowing their guts all over the place.
